Summer 2004 Exchange Program in Bethlehem, PA

Monday, July 26 Arrival at 6:50 p.m. – LVI Airport NW 1478 from Detroit
First-half host families must meet their students; others are also welcome to come.

Tuesday, July 27: Welcome Picnic
5:00 p.m. Sunshine location: Christian residence
Rain location: Dexter-Rice residence

Wednesday, July 28: Arts Day
10:00 a.m. Host families drop off students at Starbuck Goldner Tile.
10:30 -11:30 a.m. Make tiles with Steven Goldner and Beth Starbuck at their studio.
11:30 a.m. Walk over to the Banana Factory. View galleries.
12:00 p.m. Boxed Lunch
1:00-2:30 p.m. Class with Priscilla Taylor Rosenberger, a Banana Factory artist. We will be making watercolor mono prints.
2:30-3:30 p.m. Explore the unusual shops on Third Street.
3:30 p.m. Host Families pick up students at Banana Factory.

Thursday, July 29: Lancaster
7:00 a.m. Departure from Westgate Mall parking lot. Transportation provided by private coach.
Tour of Amish area, lunch and train ride on Strasburg Railroad.
5:30 p.m. Return to Westgate Mall parking lot

Friday, July 30: Free Day

Saturday, July 31: Whitewater Rafting
, White Haven
7:30 a.m. Depart from Westgate Mall parking lot. Transportation provided by participants.
10:00 a.m. Rafting begins. They will serve breakfast and people will be given equipment. Rafting excursion is approximately 4 hrs.

Sunday, August 1: Free Day

Monday, August 2: Washington, D.C. overnight
7:00 a.m. Depart from Westgate Mall parking lot. Transportation provided by Commission members.
Stop at Gettysburg for a snack and rest stop.
Overnight at George Washington University Foggy Bottom campus
Lunch and shopping at Union Station
2:00 pm. Mount Vernon/Washington after Dark Dinner Bus Tour, Union Station departure
Alexandria, VA - Christ Church, Mount Vernon – George Washington’s home
Dinner at Union Station
Night tour of Jefferson, Lincoln, Vietnam, Korean and FDR Memorials, enjoy the view from the roof of the Kennedy Center. From the bus
see the seaport town of Old Town Alexandria; Fort Washington; The Pentagon; Crystal City, VA; the U.S. Capitol; Library of Congress;
Supreme Court; House and Senate Office Buildings; Federal Triangle; Pennsylvania Avenue; the White House; Capitol Reflecting Pool;
Georgetown and Marine Corps Memorial.

Tuesday, August 3: Washington, D. C.
9:00 a.m. Breakfast
Walk to the White House, visit a Smithsonian Museum
3:00 p.m. Departure Stop in Gettysburg for snack. Arrival in Bethlehem at approximately 8:00 p.m.

Wednesday, August 4: LSA (Learn to Speak American)
10:00 a.m. Lehigh University
Host families drop off students at Lehigh University shops.
Noon Lunch on campus
1:00 p.m. Attend Japanese class at Lehigh. Students will be taken home by Commission member.

Thursday, August 5: Cookie Decorating & Swap Picnic
Cookie Decorating
10 a.m.-2 p.m. Students should be dropped off at 10 a.m. They will be delivered to host home about 2:00 p.m. Lunch provided.
Swap Picnic
Illicks Mill reserved pavilion
5:00 p.m. Both hosting families should attend. Students will bring their suitcases with them to the picnic to transfer to new host families.
Commission will provide hot dogs and hamburgers. Please sign up to bring a food item to share with the other families.

Friday, August 6: LSA
10:00 a.m. Lehigh University
Lunch hosted by Lehigh University
Commission members will take students home.
Musikfest Begins!

Saturday, August 7: Free Day

Sunday, August 8: Tea Ceremony

10:00 a.m. Tondabayashi students arrive wearing yukatas for a rehearsal before the actual ceremony.
11:00 a.m. Tea Ceremony, Serenity Garden

Monday, August 9 LSA Contact Person: Deirdre Sumpter
10:00 a.m. Lehigh University
12:15 p.m. Lunch at Lehigh University Food Court (Commission pays for Tondabayashi students).
American applicants may join the students for lunch. If not, meet Tondabayashi students at the flag poles at 1:15 p.m. and take them on a tour of historic Bethlehem. Also, time to shop and visit the Heavenly Hedgehog – where they will make up a special ice cream flavor for the students. Students decide when to return home.

Tuesday, August 10: Philadelphia
11:30 a.m. Departure from Westgate Mall parking lot. Transportation provided by Commission members/participants.
Arrive and park at the Visitor's Center, lunch in the Reading Market, trolley tour, shopping on South Street,
Dinner in Chinatown, then the Lights of Liberty show.
8:30-9:30 p.m. Lights of Liberty – in English or Japanese! For details see their web site is www.lightsofliberty.org

Wednesday, August 11: LSA
10:00 a.m. Lehigh University
12:15 p.m. Jane will take Tondabayashi students to meet with Mayor Callahan at City Hall, where official gift exchange will take place.
Students may be picked up outside City Hall at 12:45 p.m.

Thursday, August 12: New York City
8:00 a.m. Departure from Westgate Mall parking lot. Transportation provided by private coach.
Boat ride to Statue of Liberty Island
Drive past site of former World Trade Center, lunch at Central Park Zoo, Fifth Avenue – St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Rockefeller Plaza, shopping
Times Square – dinner at Planet Hollywood
9:00 p.m. Arrive at Westgate Mall

Friday, August 13: Dorney Park
1:00 p.m. Depart from Westgate Mall parking lot. Transportation provided by Commission members/participants.
10:00 p.m. Return home.

Saturday, August 14: Farewell Dinner

6:00 p.m. Lehigh University Tower, Mountaintop campus.
Menu choices: Chicken Bruschetta, Peppered Salmon, Roasted Vegetables or Chicken Tenders

Sunday, August 15: Departure
9:15 a.m. LVI Air Port departing NW Flight #1897 to Detroit
